How to start an African Clothing Business?

Hello beautiful people! Let's talk about fashion and business today.

I created It's a Wraap!! out of my passion for fashion and love for my African culture. I always knew that I wanted to create my own business, the question was "A business doing what?". To be honest with you, when you have a passion ask yourself if you could get up in the morning to turn your passion into a business. To this question, this answer was yes, now I had to figure out the “How?”

Do not worry about your age or other roadblocks, the most important is to avoid any regrets especially if it's a passion.

Here are my top 5 tips if you want to start an African clothing business.

1- Find a name

It’s 2021, everybody wants to create something. Go on www.godaddy.com and check if the domain is available, even if you don’t want to start right now, secure your name.

2- Decide what you want to sell

If you choose to design your own products, analyze the market and take notes of what is working. I wanted to make tote bags with African Prints, but people wanted to have African head wraps. So, this is what you can find right now on the website.

3- Create a budget

Any business needs money to start. By saving a little bit of every paycheck you earn, you can make your dream a reality. I started with less than $500. The most important was the sewing machine that cost me $76, then family members brought me some fabric and I bought a couple more.

Then I priced my head wraps, headbands, and bandeaux.

4- Decide where to sell your products?

In this time where everything is digital, there is a couple of options to sell your products:

  • Create your online website

  • Social Media Platforms

  • Marketplaces

It all depends on your audience. Make sure you study your target market for your small business, it will guide you to run your business.

In everything you do, I'll advise you to start with what you have, that is why I am starting with headwraps and I will improve as I go!

5- Plan, plan, plan

I am still working on this last tip. I am realizing that planning is very important. It helps you stay organized and it saves you time!

I really hope you enjoy following my journey. If you have any tips you’d like to share with me, feel free to leave them in the comment section!

Best of luck in your venture!
