This month we are celebrating Black History Month. As a Black woman, I celebrate myself every day, but February is much like a reminder for everyone that our culture matters.
To celebrate us, I decided to bring some Kente print, and design headbands and headwraps. Kente is the royal woven fabric worn during ceremonies in Ghana. Today, we can find the Ghanaian fabric printed, which makes it easy to sew African head wraps.
To honor the culture, I named the Kente print headbands after the weekdays in Kwa, language spoken by the Akan people in Ghana where the Kente cloth originated from.
In West Africa, it is very common to name people after the day of the week they were born. I have family members in Burkina Faso who are named Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This is how I know the days of the week in my mom's language. My sisters and I even made a song out of it.
